BroadBand Light (BBL) Therapy Explained
BBL treatment, or Broadband light therapy, is a cosmetic procedure to improve the health of your skin. The goal is to give your skin a clearer and more even, youthful look. BBL therapy treats a range of skin pigment and blood vessel conditions.
How does BroadBand Light (BBL) Therapy work?
BroadBand Light (BBL), also known as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or photo rejuvenation, delivers broad-spectrum visible and infrared light energy into the skin to regenerate skin cells and improve skin health. Using a handheld device, a medical professional will target multiple wavelengths of light onto the skin. This light heats cells in the skin and breaks them down. The body then removes the damaged tissue naturally.
What does BroadBand Light (BBL) Therapy target?
- Pigmentation
- Sun/Age Spots
- Broken Capillaries
- Rosacea
- Acne with Forever Clear
- Hair Removal with Forever Bare
How many treatments will I need?
For patients to get the best BBL results, it is generally recommended that patients receive, on average, 3–6 treatments scheduled four weeks apart. Every BBL treatment builds upon the previous one, allowing the skin to react gradually, therefore it is important to do a series of treatments for best results.
How should I prepare for the treatment?
- It is imperative to protect the treated skin from the sun for a full 2-4 weeks prior to laser skin treatments as well as 4 weeks after. We recommend the use of a physical sunscreen of at least 30 SPF (preferably containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide). Any tan or “color” from the sun can cause adverse side effects like burns which could lead to undesirable and potentially permanent outcomes.
- Artificial tanners must be stopped 2 weeks before your treatment on your face and 3 weeks before any body treatments.
- Discontinue aspirin for 10 days prior to an BBL treatment. Discontinue ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and Vitamin E capsules 5 days prior to the procedure. Using aspirin or ibuprofen during the week before treatment may lead to increased redness or bruising and failure for redness and capillaries to resolve with treatment. If you are using aspirin under the direction of another medical provider, please discuss with him/her prior to stopping medication.
- Do not use retinol, Retin A (tretinoin), adapalene, retinoic acid, or glycolic acid products 5 days before treatment.
- Avoid any chemical peels for 2 weeks prior to treatment.
- If you are prone to cold sores, let your provider know and they will call in a medication to prevent a new onset of cold sores after treatment.
- If anything changes in your medical history, please alert your provider prior to your scheduled appointment.
What should I expect the day of treatment?
- Photos will be taken so that your progress can be documented
- Ultrasound gel will be applied to the treatment area
- Immediate sensation and surrounding skin response:
- Sting or rubber band snap feel replaced by dissipating warmth
- Slight erythema (redness)-not always
- Mild oedema (swelling)-not always
- Pigmented lesions- will get darker
- Vascular lesions-darkening (coagulation) or transient/permanent blanching (vasoconstriction)
What should I expect post treatment?
Your skin may be temperature sensitive for several days after treatment
- Brown spots and freckles will appear darker while healing.
- It will take 4-6 weeks to see the full result and 2-3 treatments may be required to achieve an optimum result.
- The sessions are designed to provide no downtime however, occasionally you may find that your cheeks and under eye areas are slightly puffy after treatment.
